Learn and practice opportunistic communication. You, no doubt, have heard it said “timing is everything.” Well, nowhere is that more true than when one mate is expressing themselves to the other. How many of us have regrets for things we wish we had said or wished we had listened to when we had the opportunity. And, probably a like number of regrets are held by those of us who wish we had been swifter to hear and slower to have spoken. There is wisdom that has to be acquired and used as to when and how we address issues in relationships. “The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness… A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent…The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so” (Proverbs 15:2, 5, 7, cf. James 1:19; Prov. 17:27, 28). Love gratitude, admiration, and respect ought to be immediately expressed. Such expressions come from an appreciative and humble heart. The recipients of such kind words will be humbled, enlightened, and inspired to live conscience of their influence on, and value to, others. Be wise and opportunistic in your communication.
